Jorge’s prayer beads at Aparecida

Our Lady of Aparecida (Our Lady of the Appeared Conception) is the second largest basilica in the world after St. Peter's.  It draws over six million catholics a year and is known for its miracles of healing.  Like Fatima, its older church was replaced by a new modernist monstrosity.   While at the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida, during WYD Rio 2013, Jorge appeared on the balcony with something unusual wrapped around his wrist.   This was orthodox prayer beads sometime referred to as komboschoinion or chotki.

Why appear at a basilica dedicated to Our Lady and have in your hand chokti rather than Our Lady’s prayer the Rosary?

What do the eastern orthodox churches deny about the Catholic Faith?

For starters, just to name a few:
  • the dogma of the Immaculate Conception,
  • the dogma of Papal infallibility,
  • the dogma of Petrine Primacy,
  • the independence of the Church from the State.

Maybe he agrees with them.  Jorge reminds one of a progressive hipster trying to improve what God already gave him in perfect form.
